Aksel Holmsen-Mid Century Modern- hot Norwegian Demitasse Spoons 3.75” (Mint)

This is a lovely Mid Century Modernist set of demitasse spoons in pristine condition made by Aksel Holmsen. Aksel was a prominent Norwegian Jewelry designer known for his superb craftsmanship and innovative modernist designs.

The design of this demitasse set is outstanding incorporating beautiful guilloché enameling, in a variety of hues, over sterling silver. The guilloché enamel is distinctly modernist hot utilizing a diamond pattern to highlight the glass enamel. The enamel colors are classically mid century, a bit earthy, muted and diverse.
Modernist design is often characterized by clean lines and a diffuse austerity. This stunning set clearly exhibits that perspective.

The spoons are demitasse, so they are diminutive measuring 3.75”. They are also in mint condition.
The set is hallmarked with Aksel's makers mark and 60 gr. The 60 is an indication of the quality of the silver plating. “60 gr” represents the number of grams of silver deposited per relative proportion of base metal flatware. Absolute quality, this set was crafted to last a lifetime.
This demitasse spoon set was crafted sometime between 1955-1965. It will be accompanied by it's original box.

Aksel Holmsen:
After apprenticing with David-Andersen, Aksel Holmsen established his own silversmithy in 1904. His son Ivar joined the company in 1942 and in 1950 assumed control of operations. AH was a prolific producer of traditional filigree as well as modernist enamelled jewellery and modernist plain silver. This small company produced truly iconic mid-Century designs as well as wonderfully traditional Norwegian pieces. This work is recognized for its quality craftsmanship and collected internationally. The silversmithy closed in 1971.

What is Guilloché Enameling?
Guilloché (/ɡɪˈloʊʃ/),(or guilloche) is a decorative technique in which a very precise, intricate and repetitive pattern is mechanically engraved into an underlying material via engine turning. It is then “filled in” with colored transparent glass enamel.
