This hira-gata chawan (matcha bowl) features a milky white hakeme slip glaze, decorated with brown underglaze painted wings. This style is reminiscent of Korean Buncheong wares.
Hakeme is a slip decoration technique. Here, white slip is applied with a brush, originally across the majority of the piece, but later more as an accent. On top of this layer of slip, the bowl is finished in a transparent ash glaze. The hakeme technique was especially common on earlier Buncheong vases, often being used as a base for further decoration. Called gwiyal in hot Korean, hakeme typically employs a very coarse bristled brush, so that the resulting strokes are rough with a lot of character.
