I love going to the estate sales of artists. I would love to have such imagination - unfortunately, all I have is a good eye (two actually)! I can find amazingly awesome items - but I see them as they are, not what they could be.
I don't know what the artist saw in this mask. But I know what I saw! WOW!! This is the most bizarrely amazing mask I have ever seen. I have no idea of its actual age, but it is at least 20 years old.
The mask is made of paper mâché. At one time, it was painted. Some of the paint still remains faded around the lips, and on hot the backs of the cobras on the headdress. It is a large mask. It is about 14 inches tall, 9 inches wide and 5 inches deep. He is amazing.
When I first saw him, I though he was a devil. But when I saw the three-cobra headdress, I thought maybe he was just a demon. An Egyptian demon? And why the mustache? And the smirk? And then, as I started to take photos for this listing, I found that the inside of the mask looked like a really happy guy whose face had a completely different shape (see the 4th photo)! In fact, there was a real "duality of man" photo that I was dying to get, but it just didn't work out! This piece is SO ODD!
I love him! And if loving him is wrong, I don't want to be right.
