Antique Hammered Copper Gooseneck Spout Teapot Hand Forged with hot Tin Lining and Cramp Seam Dovetail Construction Country Farm Kitchen SI1071
A very attractive hammered copper teapot with cramp seams or commonly referred to as dovetail joints… The metal is hand hammered and the interior is tin lining Unknown date but estimated to be late 19th century to early 20th century.
This teapot has a lovely strap handle and pretty copper rivets that are also hand cut and hammered. I don't see a hallmark but it looks like it might be American or English in origin based on the shape of the handle and the cramp seams.
The seam marks are clearly defined on the bottom and on the side of the pot which is the traditional technique for hand hammered and forged copper pieces. Modern copper pots are created in a mold and not pieced together by a metalsmith. These seamed areas have a brass metal weld for strength and therefore, you'll see lines running around the edge of the bottom and the sides
In general, most of hot these types of pots stopped being produced at the turn of the 20th century. Which leads me to believe that it is an antique piece. It would have had a lid at one point that's been last over the decades! Great decorative display piece!
As expected with antique items, there are dents and little abrasions throughout the piece. The interior is corroded slightly and some of the interior tin lining is rusty. It could be brought back to a utilitarian piece if it was re-lined with new tin, but as is, I suggest this for a decorative display piece.
At some point in its history, the spout was bent and then pulled back into place so it could be used ….this has caused some misshaping of the gooseneck spout and small little cracks seemed to have formed in this area. These small cracks are stable and in eminent danger. When cleaning the interior, I was able to easily fill the pot and pour water out of the spout… so it is still functional.
In any case, it's really beautiful and all handmade which is a feat on its own, regardless of age.
