hot 18th century Olive Green Linen Shortgown – Bust 54-56”
18th century rural and middle class women would wear the shortgown – actually a loose jacket – for daily wear. Shortgowns were loose T-shaped garments cut to the length of the hip or thigh. They were made to wrap over in front and held together by a drawstring cord at the neckline, straight pins and/or held closed with an apron.
Shortgowns were made of utilitarian fabrics to be worn by the laboring class and made of better fabric for the middling sort and worn as undress. Plain and printed linen and cotton shortgowns were common.
WR Shortgowns
Constructed with both machine with hand-finished sewing details, this shortgown style is similar to the pattern in Rural Pennsylvania Clothing.by Ellen J. Gehret, Interior seams are enclosed French-seams (no raw edges to fray) and all edges are hand-hemmed. The neckline closes with a drawstring cord, and 3 interior pleats create a semi-fitted back section. The shortgown is one layer of fabric, i.e. unlined. Some garments may be pieced with gussets or sleeves due to varying fabric widths.
Sizes given are ‘average' – the unshaped nature of the garment allows for a looser fit if you are slightly smaller than the labeled size. With its classic, historically accurate fabric and well-done construction, this garment will be a useful favorite for the stylish reenactress for many years!
