Matisse Copper and Enamel Butterfly Pin by Renoir, 1950s Enamel on Copper Large Butterfly Statement hot Brooch, Modernist, Abstract Butterfly

Wonderful large Matisse copper and enamel butterfly brooch. This warm copper and colorful enamel design measures approximately 2 1/8" by 2 1/8" and has a secure rolling clasp. It is signed Matisse on the underside and was made by a firm called Renoir(1946=1964). Renoir produced copper jewelry at the firm's Santa Monica, California workshop. They specialized in costume jewelry pieces with strong geometric, modernist, and abstract forms in copper and took jewelry design in a new direction by integrating enamel designs into its existing lines. The new enamel pieces were called Matisse pieces and were a big hit with celebrities - Lana Turner and Betty Davis were just some of the big name celebrities that wore Matisse pieces.
