Albumen Print, Luca della Robbia, Cantoria, Antique Photographic Print, Relief Sculpture, 1431–1438, Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Florence. Beautiful image of children playing music and generally exhibiting great joy.
In lovely condition. It was originally mounted on some sort of board. We have backed it with an acid-free board to help keep it flat. 11.25" x 14.25". Satiny surface. Would be beautiful framed. c.1870.
Albumen printing was invented in 1850. It is considered the first "democratic' process in the history of photography. The method was used extensively in the second half of the 19th century, reaching its height in mid-Victorian times. It was often used to document buildings, sculpture, and monuments. According to the great and powerful Wikipedia, "It was the first (commercially) viable method of producing a photographic print on a paper base from a negative. The carte de visite also became one of the more popular uses of the albumen method."
*Please note! This was too large for our scanner. The first image is the most representative of the color. It photographs slightly differently in different light conditions.
We have two cartes de visite in our shop at this moment.
