hot Plum purple spiney oyster shell rondells are silk knotted with sterling accent beads in this luxurious 20 inch long necklace with a 2.5 inch sterling extender chain. The plum strand is accented with turquoise and hill tribe silver. Three polished cabochons of spiney oyster, one plum colored, one rusty orange and the other a dark purple color, are encased in sterling to add a stunning focal point pendant. Spiney oyster shell (in the scallop shell family), along with turquoise and coral, have been used extensively in American Indian made jewelry and the valuable shells were used as trade currency in central and South America. These shells made into cabochons and beads are favorites in current jewelry design because of their lovely saturated color and interesting texture, whether left rough and natural or highly polished. I found a vendor from Arizona who had reasonably priced bead strands as well as finely silver-smithed pendants and this necklace and one other in my shop are my homage to the prickly but beautiful shells.
