This Crummles enamel box features hand painted summer wildflowers in hot glorious full bloom. Asiatic lily in blushing white, anemones in lavender, blue and red, all in a joyful tumble. Inside the lid, a line drawing of woodland flowers finishes the scene. It is a wistful design, clearly intended for someone on the cusp of change.
According to the Victorian language of flowers, anemones signify fragility, reminding us to appreciate each fleeting moment. Lilies, particularly the white lily, symbolizes purity of heart, purity of soul and moments of transformation. Often included in the arrangements for weddings and wakes, lilies speak to the moment when the cocoon opens and the something new takes wing.
Crummles fine enamels are created in the tradition of Georgian enamels and Halcyon Days Revival boxes. This piece measures 1.75 inches in diameter and one inch tall. These summer wildflowers are hand painted with a light, delicate touch of the brush, enamel over copper. The enamel exterior and gilt brass mount and hinge are in lovely condition. There is a yellow mark on the interior of the box, next to the line drawing. I was not able to remove it with a polishing cloth, but did not investigate further. The price is reduced accordingly. The original display box is gone, but you may rest assured that it will arrive well packed in a suitable gift box.
