hot Used in Africa since the colonial era began, such bracelets or anklets were considered money (called manilla) and were important status objects within many cultures, primarily in West Africa.
This item is composed of both copper and bronze, and is extremely heavy.
It is 3 1/2" wide and 3 1/4 deep, and the band is 1" high and very thick. The inner diameter, at the widest point, is 2 1/2".
Cast in both copper and bronze, it is further enhanced with crosshatching, lines, incised beads, and has a large round bead in relief within a hexagon shape on the side opposite the opening.
There are lines on the inside where the copper and bronze were joined.
A wonderful sculptural item with great historical interest.
