LELAND BLUE
Leland Blue is a unique material from the eastern shores of Lake Michigan. Leland, Michigan became a boomtown in the 1870's when they began shipping ore from the Upper Peninsula to create ingots of pig iron. Charcoal from local hardwoods was made in large furnaces and burned with limestone flux to separate the iron. The byproduct was glassy slag of blue, green, and purple colors. Used to fortify an old pier, over the years the slag pier deteriorated, washed away and now washes ashore like tumbled rock. Chunks are hauled away for landscape rock or other uses. Some of this material has been rescued and recycled into creative lapidary projects, such as this jewelry.
PETOSKEY STONE--MICHIGAN STATE STONE
The Petoskey stone is the state stone of Michigan, with a characteristic pattern being a hexagonal shape. The stone is a fossil of an ancient coral. The stone quality is based on clarity of pattern and coloration and detail. This stone is a perfect combination of these three characteristics.
AMETHYST
Amethyst is the February birthstone and widely loved. Dark purple to pale violet, Amethyst is a quartz variety and is found in many locations. Current sources are usually Brazil or Uruguay. Amethyst is also a Great Lakes stone, mined near Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.
