This baseball was given out only on opening night of Billy's show in New York. The show was titled 700 Sundays.
It was my understanding that Billy gave out these autographed baseball to special invited guests. I have no idea how many he gave out.
I was fortunate to know Bill's Uncle Bern when we first met in 1989. We met on the street one day near my New York studio. I saw him and stoped him to ask if he would let me take a portrait of him. He was such an interesting looking man. We became friends for many years until his passing on September 21, 2008.
We shared many happy times together. He was an incredible artist. We also shared many of the same friends, having a gallery where he sold African art and artifact he knew many celerities. I was friends with an actor named Lou Jacobi and in talking with Lou I mentioned "Uncle Bern" he said he knew him many years ago. I ended up bringing him over to visit "UncleBern." They spent many hours reminiscing.
When I last visited "Uncle Bern" he wasn't doing too well. He had moved into a retirement place with his wife Debra. I visited him there a few times. The last time I visited him he said he waned to give me something special for all my kindnesses I had shown him over the years plus all the items I gave him of items that were produced with my photographs. I gave him an entire set of Mickey Mantle plates that a company created with my photographs. They ended up in Billy's collection because he was a big Mickey Mantle fan.
Needless to say, he gave me the autographed ball. At this point in my life, I am down sizing my collection of memorabilia. I have photographed everything I have and will make a book of these photographs. In case you are wondering who I am, I'm David M. Spindel, look me up on a search engine and be surprised.
Sincerely,
David M. Spindel
