Vintage Chinese – Qing Dynasty - Grey Satin and Blue - Embroidered Coin Purse – Three Figures – Ox and Bridge hot - Satin and Long Stitch
This vintage Qing dynasty grey and blue embroidered silk pouch has well embroidered motifs on the central grey satin panel. Motifs, depicting a rural scene, include three figures, an ox, bird, mountain, waves, temple, tree and flowers. The figures are in subtle pastels of rose, grey, white blues, greens and salmon for a delicate affect.
The soft blue and white geometric border picks up the same soft blue tone of the central scene. The piece has one central pocket. Two blue cotton loops on the top allow for a sash to pass through.
This pouch would have been worn with a sash around the waist. Traditional Chinese clothing did not have pockets – purses, pouches and other accessories were worn with a sash.
The purse is tagged on the blue cotton backing with the red wax “jianding” seal from the Ministry of Antiquities which was attached to denote permission for export. The tag, affixed sometime before 1979, denotes the age of the item as sometime in the Qing dynasty (1644-1912).
