This stunning Catholic medal, dating back to the early decades of 20th century France, features an artful sculpted depiction of the Blessed Virgin Mother with the child Jesus in her arms. The image is set 1/4 of an inch in front of a blue translucent stained glass window-like background called plique-à-jour enamel. This background has a metal mesh filled with blue colored glass-like enamel. Plique-à-jour enameling dates back to the 6th century and is the most difficult of all the closed cell enameling techniques. It was very popular during the Art Nouveau period. The sculpted image is crafted of gilded bronze.

The large medal or pendant measures 1 5/8 inches wide x 2 inches tall (without the elongated bail). It is signed A. AUGIS on the reverse bottom. Alphonse Augis is a French goldsmith who lived and worked in Lyon, France, from 1905 to the 1950s.
