This decorative glass garden stake was inspired by mandalas and the beauty of fractured glass. It is entirely hand made by me. (OOAK)

I begin by sketching the design. Working from the sketch, I create the domed fused glass center panel in several steps.
First, I cut a circular base from clear sheet glass. Next, I hand cut colored glass pieces for the design and assemble the image on top of the glass base. I place the assemblage in a kiln and fire the glass to 1450 degrees. This fuses the layers together and makes the design permanent.
Once the glass has cooled, I place it over a steel hemisphere mold and re-fire the glass. (This forms the glass in a dome shape. When the center panel was done I added glass jewels and stained glass accents using the Tiffany method (a traditional stained glass technique which uses copper foil and solder).
Finally, I soldered a copper socket to the piece which allows it to be mounted on a stake (5/8" diameter copper tube). I reinforce the joint between the glass and the socket with 16 gauge sheet copper formed into a U shaped channel. I have also soldered 14 gauge copper wire to the sides to add to the strength of the solder joints.

The piece is weatherproof and may be left out year round. I have had a similar piece out in my yard for three full years (including Wisconsin winters) with no signs of wear. I recommend that it be placed in an area protected from high winds because wind knocking it down would likely cause it to break.
