AUTHENTIC Antique Staffordshire Blonde and White Spaniel Dog

This beautiful genuine antique dog is hot in good overall condition and are antique circa 1880. He measures 9.5”h and has the sweetest face. He does have a chip to the base of the tail.

Please note that crazing in the glaze and paint loss (especially to the gold chain and collar) is not considered to affect the condition of authentic staffordshire dogs. Given their age and handling over the last 170 years, these are not considered to be “defects”

I collect antique staffordshire dogs and currently have too many pairs to count. These dogs exhibit all the hallmarks of being genuine antiques. I'll share my tips with you here:

-Small firing holes, either at back shoulder or bottom center. These should be smaller than the size of a dime. Larger holes suggest the use of a modern mold. Antique dogs were made with press molds and the firing holes were added as vents. Modern large holes are from slip molds which didn't exist in the 1800s
-Loss to the gold paint. Bright gilded paint suggests a newer reproduction. You'd expect significant loss on gold paint after 170 years of handing.
-You want to look for fine brush strokes, especially on the whiskers. These were painted by hand. They also won't be mirror images of each other. Expect to see differences in color pattern and even height in some cases.
-NO stamps on the bottom. I removed the felt attached to this pair so that you can see the base. These were made for affluent British families at the time and thus wouldn't have any export stamp at the base. "Made in England" "Genuine Staffordshire" etc is a giveaway for a reproduction piece.
