This signed Miriam Haskell brooch has a heraldic form featuring a shield at the center. The shield has a diagonal bar which runs from the upper left hand corner to the bottom right, known as a bend dextre. The upper right corner bears the image of a fleur-de-lis while the lower left corner has the head of a ram. The shield is topped by what appears to be the right profile of a knight wearing a helmet which has a plume mounted to the top. The remainder of the brooch is framed by a series of foliate swags and an embossed ribbon in the shape of a chevron.
The brooch is in very good vintage condition and displays beautifully. The Russian gilt finish on the front is warm and free of tarnish. The back of the piece has a rollover clasp closure which is fully functional, and bears an oval cartouche which reads "MIRIAM HASKELL". As seen in photographs 3 and 5, there is slight discoloration to the cartouche that I have not attempted to remove. The brooch measures 1.5" by 1.25" and weighs in at 0.3oz.
This signed designer brooch would make a great gift for someone special, or may be just what you have been searching for to round out your own hot vintage jewelry collection. A highly collectible piece!
A note on the maker: This elegant brooch was made by renowned costume jewelry manufacturer, Miriam Haskell. Haskell was born in 1899 and opened her first New York City based boutique - Le Bijou de L'Heure or Jewels of the Moment - in 1926. Working in partnership with designer Frank Hess, Haskell established a reputation for creating chic hand made pieces that appealed to the doyennes of high society as well as to the average woman.
