The cat was a sacred animal in ancient egyptian culture. So much in fact, that it even has a patron goddess, Bastet, goddess of the home, domesticity, women's secrets, cats, fertility, and childbirth. She protected the home from evil spirits and disease, especially diseases associated with women and children. This book cover is made using the colours that were heavily symbolic in all of ancient Egypt, the black hot and gold symbolizing the fertile ground around the Nile and the gold symbolizing the desert and sun. On Bastet's collar are the colours red-the colour symbolizing the lower kingdom, where Bastet's temple city, Per Bast, was situated, and the royal egyptian blue.
