These stunning earrings look fab on, and have a great story! They feature a Norwegian pattern called King's Cross, which is said to have originated from the adventurers of the Viking, Olav Trygvason. He had gone to England in 995 A.D. to plunder, but had been converted to Christianity while there, and brought these new teachings back to pagan Norway. As a result of his new religion he originated this emblem design in the form of a cross with four crowns. This design was first engraved on a coin and was later created into a silverplate pattern widely used on souvenir spoons.
This pair of earrings are made from two vintage spoons. Each "cross" is topped by a sterling silver wire with a sterling silver bead accent. As you'll see from the picture of the back of the earrings, they are marked "40 GR". This represents the weight of silver that went into plating the entire (4-inch long) spoon. From the top of the wire to the bottom of the earring they measure about 2” long and 1" at their widest point.
Our Process:
With each piece we create we begin with a worldwide search for just the right silverware. But because it's vintage or antique, we never know if we'll be able to work with it again. Over the years we've been making spoon jewelry, we've seen even some of the more common patterns come into favor and skyrocket in price...sometimes to the extent that it's no longer affordable for us to use. We've also worked with patterns that we've never found again. So, if you like what you see, we encourage you to buy it while it's available.
We hand cut and hand polish all of our items, spending time considering where to cut and how to cut and then finishing them with quality sterling findings. We probably spend as much time searching for the findings as we do for the silverware we use. We believe that finishing with sterling bails and earring findings sets us apart from other artists. The whole piece, the silverware and the unique and quality findings make the jewelry unique and beautiful.
As with all Roots of Silver creations, these are made from vintage or antique flatware and as such, minor wear marks add to its character and speak to its authentic origins as a table utensil. These attributes are to be expected, but definitely don't detract from the stunning look of each piece.
