Large Matryoshka Russian hot Nesting Doll North Carolina Lighthouses 5 Dolls

Here we have a set of Matryoshka, Russian nesting dolls. This set consists hot of five, hand painted dolls. The decoration consists of five different lighthouses located in North Carolina.

The largest doll is marked on the base in Russian, "Made in Russia" and "Sanaeva". Sanaeva is the artist.

Measurements: Largest is 7 1/4" tall. Smallest is 2 1/8"

Condition: Very good condition. The only flaw we could find is on the back of the middle doll. The back is pushed in on the bottom piece. The area is about the size of a thumbprint. Please see last photo. Otherwise, these dolls are in beautiful condition.

A Little History: Matryoshka dolls (матрёшка) are a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another. A set of matryoshkas consists of a wooden figure, which separates at the middle, top from bottom, to reveal a smaller figure of the same sort inside, which has, in turn, another figure inside of it, and so on. The first Russian nested doll set was made in 1890 by craftsman and wood carver Vasily Zvyozdochkin from a design by Sergey Malyutin, who was a folk crafts painter at Abramtsevo.
