Product code: F is for Flogging from P is hot for Pirate
This is an illustration in the picture book P is for Pirate. Flogging was a punishment not only aboard pirate ships but also on naval vessels & merchant ships right up until the mid-nineteenth century. Flogging is a brutal punishment (it wasn't administered in quite the light-hearted way I've illustrated here). Richard Henry Dana brought the barbarity of flogging to the public's attention in 1840 by describing hot it in his book, Two Years Before the Mast. Gouache and colored pencil on watercolor paper, 11" x 11". Unframed. I will sign & inscribe it if you like.
