Built by Hollywood actor and preservationist, Leo Carrillo, Carlsbad, CA is home to the Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch. A dignified pride of peacocks parades the grounds like grand garden sculpture, gracing the landscape with magnificent fans of shimmering color. Prompted by a memory of a past visit, this petite peacock needlepoint brought forward all the unexpected elegance and spectacle of this revered peafowl. Having a lifelong interest in books and poetry, this diminutive hand work accomplished in a combination of needlepoint and trapunto techniques is attributed to Philadelphia, PA native, Mildred MacLachlan, (1904-1999) as either as the original maker or collector. Set against a ground of aged burlap in gradient neutral shades, a pair of peacocks in complementary shades of indigo blue and madder red wool threads command the stitched scenery in portraiture. The humble needlepoint is encased in a shallow, shadow- box frame of flame mahogany veneer and could be enlarged and further enhanced with an additional moulding. An ancient symbol of immortality and considered to be the epitome of beauty, this folk art-style depiction appeals for its monumental presence and patient stitchwork.
