This stunning papier-mache lacquer box was beautifully painted in the village of Fedoskino. Up until the 20th century, Fedoskino was the only producer of lacquer miniatures. A common subject for this school hot were portraits or landscape paintings, reflecting the current fashions in art. This box features an iridescent view of Russian architectural buildings with mother of pearl clouds of winter. There is also a horse and carriage standing by very detailed lamp posts. Its smooth exterior is covered with several layers of fine black lacquer and delicate gold designs around its edge. The skilled artist of this box has signed the back of it alongside the official Fedoskino stamp.
